Like the other great militants of his time, Roosevelt always knew exactly how to deal with certain circumstances concerning the well being of the American society. Unfortunately, Roosevelt’s confrontational attitude and military proposal to deal with things may have caused the people of his time to highly disagree with his ideas and way of protecting America. Because of this Roosevelt deserves a B.
As the new president, TR hoped to expand American ideals throughout Latin America and European countries, pay off the American debts, and provide assistance in both health care and old age pensions to the American people. Thanks to his efforts all of these goals were achieved.
In order to assist the people TR introduced the “square deal” which provided equality between the average man and the High class business man. He was also the first to introduce universal health care and insurance. Another ideal was his conservation act which informed people how to use their limited resources correctly. He also worked on “peace” between the us and many other countries. He did so in the russo-japenease war by negating peace between the two. For this he was awarded the Nobel peace prize of 1906. Perhaps another great achievement of his presidency was the construction of the panama canal in 1904. This canal could be used by anyone for quick transportation not just Americans. Which also strengthened the liking of US among the other countries. (the US did have control) The quick transportation not only provided easy access from the west coast to the east but it also opened more trade routes between countries who otherwise would have been to far apart to collaborate. This increase in trade helped the worldwide economy grow and also helped countries remove themselves from debt. In order to fully remove themselves from their debt other measures also needed to be completed. With the introduction of the Roosevelt corollary, a modification of the Monroe doctrine, Latin American collection of owed debts could be paid off (to Germany and other countries) along with intervention by the US to stop European imperialism in these countries. With American intervention many of our ideals and way of compromise were also spread throughout. All of these policies, especially the peace negations with other countries and the US intervention in order to protect other countries are still used toady. These policies help us protect not only ourselves but also the smaller countries who may need assistance.
Like the majority of presidential cabinets, Roosevelt’s cabinet had personal disagreements as well as understood compromise. For example, the cabinet disagreed with Roosevelt’s belief that the puertan- Ricans should be considered citizens but they did agree that the us should intervene in order to protect the Latin American countries.
Perhaps one of TR best achievements was his involvement in building the panama canal. This opened many new opportunities for both the American population and the remaining countries bordering panama o in need of a new route. Not only did it provide a better way to increase trade and help the economy but it also strengthened the US relations with our southern border. Roosevelt ‘s anti trust policy on the other hand created many bad circumstances. By taking money from the big business and corporations many smaller business then failed and banks had to be closed. This sudden decrease in income caused the society to quickly drop into the panic of 1907. Roosevelt also dealt with those who disagreed with his policies by the use of “the big stick.” many people disagreed with his harsh military use and many people became angered.
In conclusion, TR was a very good president. He knew exactly how to help the economy grow in not only America but also in the surrounding countries as well. He could have dealt with personal issues without being so forward and rude but at least he was always able to patch up his mistakes.
